Male Violence Tally & LGBTI Focused Media Literacy Workshops

SivilDüşün EU Programme held a consultative meeting with a theme of Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, due to 8th March International Women’s Day. Within the frame of the meeting, activism, data journalism and LGBTI focused media literacy workshops were held. 60 women’s organizations from 54 cities joined the meeting.

bianet’s women and LGBTI news editor ÇiçekTalhaoglu led the data journalism workshop and explained male violence tallies. Talhaoglu said “when examined annually, it is seen that cases of rape, assault and violence generally go unpunished and reparative justice is not applied.”
Tahaoglu also said that other journalist around the world usually uses data given by the government but in Turkey there is not such data. “Governmental institutes give conflicting numbers, that’s why; we started male violence tallies in 2008,” she explained.
Attorney BirsenAtakan from Nonviolent Education and Research Association talked about how activists could maintain their physical and mental health in another workshop. “It is really hard to make a change in a short time, social conditions are much more difficult recently,” she said and continued: “In order to make a change, it is very important for activists to heal themselves.”
