The Past and the Future of Climate Change Acts: How Is It Possible to Come Together Globally?

Istanbul Policy Center of Sabanci University has been holding a series of events called “Climate Café”. 2015/16 Mercator-IPC researcher Hande Peker and independent researcher Baran Alp Uncu were the latest speakers in the event. They discussed the past and the future of climate change acts, along with the possibilities of a globally united struggle.

Saying that the notion of “cosmopolitan citizenship” brings together different identities and demands, Paker claimed that recent ecological crisis brings out the cosmopolitan obligations which sociologist Ulrich Beck pointed. Paker said that facing a global problem as climate change makes people try to create a mutual political ground for struggle.

Baran Alp Uncu talked about the emerging of climate change actions and its changes within time.

Uncu said that climate change actions started in 1980s with organizations like Greenpeace and Friends of the Earthand then it expanded and evolved with networks such as Climate Action Networkand Climate Justice Now!

Lastly, Uncu explained that after COP21 (2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference) new organizations, strategies and collaborations emerged and Greenpeace also started to cooperate with other organizations.
