Human Rights Activists Are in the Parliament

After the Elections on 24th June, there are now young people, deposed academicians and human rights activists in the Parliament.

But, will the politics be more focused on civil society? Besides of CHP deputy Sezgin Tanrıkulu and AKP deputy Mustafa Yeneroglu; founder of MAZLUMDER Cihangir İslam, professor of constitutional law İbrahim Kaboğlu, former president of Diyarbakır Medical Association Selçuk Mızraklı, president of Diyarbakır Institute for Political and Social Research Necdet İpekyüz and former president of MAZLUMDER Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu are in the Parliament.

Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu has one of the most interesting stories among the new deputies. Former president of MAZLUMDER, Gergerlioğlu continued his works as a part of Initiative for Haq after MAZLUMDER’s 16 offices were shut down by a decree law.  Being also the founder of Rights and Justice Platform, Gergerlioglu was sued for sharing a representational photo of a demonstration during the Solution Process and was deposed by a decree law. After his deposition, he worked as a doctor in Batman for about a year. Although he was deposed by the state, the public voted for him to be their representative in the Parliament.
